Tributes are pouring in for “Dallas Buyers Club” director Jean-Marc Vallée, who died suddenly Sunday at 58.
The beloved filmmaker passed away in his cabin outside Quebec City. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack, Deadline reported.
Vallée, who earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture for “Dallas Buyers Club,” also worked with stars such as Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley on his Emmy-winning HBO series “Big Little Lies.”
The actresses were among the many celebrities who shared heartfelt condolences Monday following the news.
“My heart is broken. My friend. I love you,” Witherspoon, 45, tweeted.
“I am in shock. Complete and utter shock,” began Woodley, 30, via her Instagram Stories. “My f – – king god death is the worst.”
“But I guess somehow I know you will turn it into a grand adventure . . . one for the books,” she continued. “One I can’t wait to read & to watch when my time comes.”
The “Fault in Our Stars” actress added, “It doesn’t make sense though dude. It doesn’t make sense. Maybe when we wake up tomorrow you’ll be there laughing saying it was just a satirical short film you made. That it’s not real.”
The Montreal-born filmmaker was also memorialized by Canadian’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said Vallée “left a mark in Quebec, across Canada and around the world.”
“Bridesmaids” filmmaker Paul Feig tweeted, “My god, this is so unbelievably sad. What a huge loss. He was an incredibly talented filmmaker. Sending much love and condolences to his family. #RIPJeanMarc.”
HBO released a statement regarding the “Sharp Objects” director’s death via Deadline, saying, “Jean-Marc Vallée was a brilliant, fiercely dedicated filmmaker, a truly phenomenal talent who infused every scene with a deeply visceral, emotional truth. He was also a hugely caring man who invested his whole self alongside every actor he directed. We are shocked at the news of his sudden death, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to his sons, Alex and Émile, his extended family, and his longtime producing partner, Nathan Ross.”
Frozen actor Josh Gad, 40, wrote, “Oh my God. This is so horrible. Absolutely loved his work. RIP #Jeanmarkvalleè.”
Blumhouse Productions also paid tribute, writing: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of our friend Jean-Marc Vallée. He left an indelible mark on the entire ‘Sharp Objects’ team, and we are all grateful for the opportunity we had to collaborate with him. RIP.”
Singer Finneas added, “Damn, Rest In Peace to Jean-Marc Vallée. Incredible artist.”
