The Girl Before fans threaten to switch off over 'slow and confusing' format: ‘Help!’

The Girl Before is the BBC’s new psychological thriller, which was initially announced in March of this year. Led by former EastEnders star Jessica Plummer, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ben Hardy and David Oyelowo, the thriller follows the story of a house and its occupants three years apart. However, within minutes of the show starting, viewers were threatening to “switch off” over the slow storyline and confusing time change.

Twitter user @Janey4478542 wrote: “If this gets any slower, I’m afraid I will have to switch over, sad because I had very high hopes for this! #TheGirlBefore.”

@gothiron commented: “Oh, get on with it! #TheGirlBefore.”

@see75 tweeted: “Struggling to stay with #TheGirlBefore, but I also want to know what happened!”

@GeorgeiLoubag said: “Very confused so far, anyone actually know what’s going on? #TheGirlBefore.”

@TheRadioFanatic added: “What’s going on? Are there two different timelines? Help! #TheGirlBefore.”

@SiTheGooner84 echoed: “Very confused by #TheGirlBefore. Not sure if this worth watching or not… reviews are great, just not feeling it right now! Anyone else not quite getting it?” (sic)

Episode one of the BBC thriller aired on Sunday and tells the story of Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who gets the chance to move into a new minimalist house.

The catch is the occupants must abide by the architect’s exhaustive rules, but Jane soon makes a shocking discovery when she finds out her predecessor Emma (Jessica Plummer) died in the house, finding unnerving similarities.

Flicking between the two, the real estate agents explain: “The owner sets an affordable rent, to people who’ll live here the way he intended.

“He’s an architect, he was going to live here himself at one stage, I believe, but now he rents it out instead.”

Jane asked: “So, it’s stuff like, what? No smoking, no pets?”

The real estate agents continued: “It’s a bit more than that, no pictures, no ornaments, no carpets, no rugs, no books.

“No children obviously, no planting anything in the garden, there’s about 200 in all, no drinks coasters, no magazines, no knick-knacks.”

At the end of the episode, after Jane found out Emma had died in her house before her, Emma also found out the architect’s wife had also died before she moved in and again saw an uncanny resemblance.

Jane also decided to embark on a relationship with the architect, but his true intentions are still yet to be unveiled.

The Girl Before continues Monday 9pm on BBC One.
