Spider-Man: No Way Home breaks box office records with HUGE $50million in previews

Spider-Man: No Way Home breaks box office records with HUGE $50million in previews… beating the likes of The Last Jedi and Avengers: Infinity War

Spider-Man is here to save the box office.

On Friday it was revealed the latest installment in the franchise – Spider-Man: No Way Home – took in in a staggering $50million in Thursday previews alone.

Setting an impressive new bar for blockbuster movies of the pandemic-era, the Tom Holland and Zendaya-starring film is now set to rake in between $150 million to $180 million over opening weekend, Variety estimates.

In fact, the film scored the third-largest preview total ever, trailing only those for Avengers: Endgame ($60 million) and The Force Awakens ($57 million).

Previews once featured only late-night screenings, but they have steadily moved earlier in the day. The movie began playing around 3 p.m. in 3,767 locations.

Deadline also claims that the film has even beaten the likes of Avengers: Endgame and The Last Jedi in terms of its Thursday preview haul.

There had been concerns that rising COVID-19 cases and the Omicron variant could potentially put off ticket-buying cinemagoers, but that does not seem to be the case.

It has been estimated that Spider-Man: No Way Home could be the first movie in the pandemic so far to reach $100million in just one weekend.

The last film that came close to that was Sony Pictures other comic book movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which reached $90million at the US box office in its first weekend.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is managing to pack theaters even as the spreading omicron variant is forcing closures in the entertainment industry, including numerous Broadway shows.

As recently as last week, when Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story opened softly, the box office had been fitfully sputtering back to life.

But while some moviegoers, particularly older ticket-buyers, have been more reluctant, the younger, devoted Marvel fanbase has proven resistant to the pandemic challenges of moviegoing.

With No Way Home, Marvel releases will make up five of the top six films of the year, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Black Widow and Eternals.
