  • Underdog found success on the feet before sinking in a submission in second
  • Joe Rogan, who was commentating, claimed the submission was inexcusable
  • He criticised the former bantamweight queen for her fatigued performance

UFC commentator Joe Rogan has criticised former bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes for a fatigued performance in her shock defeat to Julianna Pena at UFC 269.

On Saturday, Pena caused one of the biggest upsets in UFC history as she submitted Nunes to defeat to become the new women’s bantamweight champion.

Nunes tapped out quickly in the second round as Pena executed the choke and Rogan claimed it was inexcusable for the Lioness to be so fatigued that early into the clash.

Rogan, who was commentating cageside in Las Vegas, was highly critical of Nunes as he  broke down the fight on ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ with Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

‘She was like trying to take her out quick and then when Julianna was still there, you could tell she was f***** tired,’ he said, via Sportskeeda.

‘For you to be a world champ in two divisions and universally recognised as the greatest women fighter of all time – which Amanda Nunes is – it’s [inexcusable] to be that tired in the second round.

‘Just standing in front of her. Just swinging in front of her no movement side-to-side. Standing right in front of her like you’re watching a regional fight.’

Rogan joked he was about to ‘have a heart attack’ as Pena shattered the odds to become the new ruler of the women’s 135-pound division.

After the fight, he took to Instagram to congratulate the champion, writing: ‘I’ve seen a lot of fights, but that might very well be the wildest moment I’ve ever experienced watching combat sports.

‘Daniel Cormier a and I were about to have a heart attack. Thank god Jon Anik kept it together and professional!

‘A massive congratulations to the new champ Julianna Pena for turning the combat sports world on its head and giving it a proper spanking! What a night!!!’
