'Spouting garbage’: Drivers attack plans to end car ownership – 'how would it work for me'

Transport minister, Trudy Harrison, called for the country to move away from car ownership, with shared mobility instead becoming the norm. The MP for Copeland said the country needs to move away from “20th century thinking centred around private vehicle ownership” and introduce “greater flexibility, with personal choice and low carbon shared transport”.

Similarly, jimhewitt44 commented on how it would affect him: “When we first moved to this area, we lived in a village between Stevenage & Welwyn Garden City.

“So not a million miles from the London centric wombles.

“There was a regular (and only) bus service to Stevenage. It left on Thursday morning at 09.00 and returned at 13.00.

“This was our only bus service, and they now expect everybody not to have a car.

Another reader questioned how it would work for emergency services.

Gordiwow asked: “So as a paramedic working night and day 12 hour shifts all year round, some of which finish at two or three in the morning with a 30-mile journey home.

“Tell me, how would it work for me?”

Some drivers even pointed towards the infrastructure across the UK, with a reader using the nickname Worzel Gummidge, criticising the Government.

They said: “If we had a proper integrated transport system across the UK I think more people would be willing to get rid of their car.

“However, the Government would do well to consider that without the mobility that cars provide, people won’t be able to get to their place of work, the out-of-town supermarkets or simply to visit friends and family.

“Not very well thought out is it?”
