Gomorrah cancelled: Why Italian series had to end with season 5 ‘It’s unpredictable’

The final series of Gomorra will see Gennaro “Genny” Savastano (played by Salvatore Esposito) learn his old friend and rival Ciro di Marzio (Marco D’Amore) is alive and in Latvia. Gennaro was certain Ciro was dead after he sacrificing himself in the series three finale. Now they will go head to head for one final time and the show’s writers have explained why it is time for it comes to an end.

Writer Leonardo Fasoli explained: “When we arrived at the ending of the season, we decided it was the last season.

“It was because like Claudio said before, it is good to finish when you are in a high position than to explore too much material until the end.”

Fellow writer Maddalena Ravagli added there were discussions on whether the series could return in the future.

She teased: “There is a possibility in our mind of exploring who was taking control of Secondigliano, which is really interesting in the 70s.

“It was a key passage for the Camorra after the Second World War, you know the trade of of cigarettes, heroine and big link with French connections.”

“It’s not easy, really from my point of view,” the Italian actor explained.

“It’s like a story or an affair that comes to an end. On the one hand, you’re happy because this journey this situation is coming to an end and you’re ready to embark on a new life or something else.

“On the other hand, there’s also this regret having to say goodbye to a character that you created, loved, that you did justice to for the good and the bad.”

It’s not known how the final episodes will unfold but it seems there will no peace for Ciro, nicknamed The Immortal.

Actor Marco explained of his character’s nickname: “The mortality of the character is actually a conviction it’s by no way a power and there is a line very iconic Salvatore says to Ciro and it’s really a conviction in saying so.”

He added: “And Gennaro says to Ciro, death is a gift but you’re convicted to stay on this earth and without any peace and without forgiveness.”

Could it be Gennaro gets to live his life free of the Camorra while Ciro is destined to be tortured by the criminal organisations of Secondigliano?

Gomorrah season 5 premieres on December 18 on NOW and Sky Atlantic.
