NYU to require booster shots due to Omicron concerns

New York University will require COVID-19 booster shots for all of its “community members” by Jan. 18 amid the fast-spreading Omicron strain, the school said Tuesday.

“A booster vaccination against COVID-19 will be a vital — and required — part of NYU’s effort to enhance the safety of the NYU community,” the school said in a statement.

“We want to give you as much notice as possible to get your required COVID-19 booster vaccination and upload your proof before the deadline,” it said.

The notice said the shots will not be required for those “with approved exemptions.”

All others must provide proof of the booster.

NYU said about 80 percent of its staffers and students are eligible for boosters.

The spread of the Omicron variant has been particularly troubling for health experts, who are still getting a handle on the severity of the fast-spreading bug.

Cornell University announced Tuesday that the Ivy League school is shutting down its main campus amid concerns over the spread of Omicron.

Cornell said a “substantial number” of students at its Ithaca campus have the strain.
