Christmas shoppers abandon vehicles due to chaos at car park

Photos show a bumper-to-bumper queue for drivers to leave Ilac Shopping Centre in Dublin city centre, in which some shoppers reportedly had to wait three hours. Orla Spratt queued at 4.20pm but hadn’t left the car park by 7.30pm, by which time other motorists had decided to leave their cars and walk out of the multi-storey site.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Orla said: “It was an absolute nightmare. Not one member of staff came along and spoke to anybody.

“There were people with babies. There are people with young kids trying to get into their cars.

“They were actually just walking away and leaving their cars there or their partners were getting into the cars and they were walking with the children.

“Not one person came along and said sorry or made an announcement.”

Dublin city centre was busy with shoppers yesterday – the penultimate Sunday before Christmas – as people rushed to bag presents.

Ilac Shopping Centre is home to several high street brands, including Boots, Argos and TK Maxx.

Orla considered getting a taxi and leaving her motor on the fourth floor of the car park, but chose to wait in the queue in the end.

Ilac Shopping Centre has been contacted for comment.
