Lewis Hamilton issues cryptic message to Max Verstappen as Mercedes denied two protests

Lewis Hamilton showed the utmost respect for Max Verstappen after having his eighth career world title snatched from his hand on the controversial final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Verstappen took advantage of an FIA call to close the gap to leaders Hamilton under a safety car.

The Dutchman, who was on fresher tyres than Hamilton, overtook his Mercedes rival on Turn 5 to claim the victory which earned him the Drivers’ Championship.

Hamilton skipped the mandatory post-race press conference as Mercedes protested two decisions to the FIA.

Both of the protests were rejected so the Silver Arrows submitted an intention to appeal, meaning they can take their case through the courts if they launch an official appeal within 96 hours.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and star driver Hamilton have refused to comment on the late incidents.

But Hamilton was interviewed immediately after stepping out of his car and he warned Verstappen about 2022, saying “We’ll see about next year.”

It is unclear if Hamilton was referencing a potential retirement hint over whether he would race next season.

His message could also be interpreted as warning Verstappen that he will be gunning for revenge when the racing resumes in March.

Hamilton is under contract with Mercedes until the end of the 2023 season, in which he will be approaching his 39th birthday.

Red Bull boss Horner was very complimentary of Hamilton after the race.

“They’ve been great competitors this year,” Horner said. “And Lewis has been a phenomenal driver.

“It’s had its moments, it has been tense. It’s been tough. But we’re just delighted with the outcome. And very proud of Max tonight. He has been phenomenal all year.”
