McDonald's makes huge change to new restaurant which could be coming to every store

McDonald’s is constantly changing and updating its brand in line with customer demand. Doing its small part for the environment, the fast-food chain has launched the first net zero carbon restaurant in the UK.

Meanwhile, a biodiversity garden and nature trail designed by children from nearby Market Drayton Junior School will collect rainwater from the car park and provide a habitat for frogs and other creatures.

The restaurant itself is in Market Drayton, Shropshire, but its new features could soon be put in place in other McDonald’s restaurants throughout the UK.

Or, McDonald’s could soon build similar restaurants in other sites.

The fast-food chain said it plans to use the Market Drayton model as a “blueprint” site to achieve net zero emissions for all its 1,400 restaurants and offices in the UK by 2030.

The new building is the first restaurant in the UK due to be verified as net zero emissions for construction using the UK Green Building Council’s (UKGBC) net zero carbon buildings framework.

Commenting on the company’s latest development, McDonald’s vice president of supply chain and brand trust, Beth Hart, said: “At McDonald’s we believe that our food needs to be served in restaurants that are sustainable for the future.

“Market Drayton is a big step towards making that a reality, enabling us to test and put into practice what a net zero emissions building, both in build and use, really looks like.

“We’ve already started to roll out some of these innovations to other restaurants, but what is exciting about Market Drayton is the fact it will act as a blueprint for our future new builds.”

Simon McWhirter, spokesperson for UKGBC, added: “The challenge of decarbonising the construction industry is a complex one, but McDonald’s commitment to building the first restaurant in the UK in line with UKGBC’s net zero carbon buildings framework is a critical first step.

“We welcome the ambition to achieve net zero emissions for all McDonald’s restaurants and offices by 2030.”

In other McDonald’s news, the fast-food chain has added two new hot drinks to its range.

These are the Choco Fudge Latte and the Hot Chocolate Deluxe.

The Latte consists of a large espresso shot blended with steamed milk and a chocolate fudge flavoured syrup, topped off with a swirl of cream and a drizzle of chocolate fudge.

Meanwhile, the Hot Chocolate Deluxe consists of chocolate syrup, cream, and chocolate dusting – improving the already popular winter drink.

These hot drinks are part of McDonald’s Christmas menu, available now at the fast-food’s branches nationwide.
