Jets’ offense barely saw field in miserable third quarter against Eagles

The Jets’ offense spent a good chunk of the middle of Sunday’s game in the same spot as you — watching.

The Jets ran just three plays in the third quarter and possessed the ball for 1 minute 10 seconds of the period. The Jets got a first down with 11 minutes left in the second quarter and then not again until there were 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Eagles mounted a 14-play drive that lasted 8 minutes, 22 seconds to start the second half. The Jets then went three-and-out and the Eagles put together a 13-play drive that ended in the fourth quarter.

Both Eagles’ drives ended in field goals and sucked the life out of the Jets in the 33-18 loss. The Jets’ offense was off the field for more than an hour in real time other than a kneel down at the end of the first half.

“They had the ball to finish the first half. Then, they go eight minutes,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “And then, it’s a quick drive for us and then they have the ball again for however many minutes it was. You’re looking at over an hour of real time where our offense was on the field for just a quick minute. So yeah, it does, especially when it’s cold and you’re trying to stay warm and in rhythm. All of that matters.”

The Eagles got help from the Jets or from the officials, depending on your perspective, on the long drives. Bryce Hall was called for pass interference on a third down. C.J. Mosley was flagged for encroachment on a fourth down. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni won a challenge on a spot after it looked like the Jets had stopped the Eagles on fourth down. All of it kept the Eagles rolling.

WR Corey Davis (groin) played after being questionable but left early in the fourth quarter after re-injuring himself. … RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif injured his ankle in the third quarter and did not return. … CB Michael Carter II suffered a concussion.
