Experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts have recommended the solution which can take just minutes to prepare. It involves mixing water with rubbing alcohol which almost anyone can find in their cupboards.
They said: “Glass can crack when it experiences a sudden change in temperature, and windscreen damage isn’t always covered by a standard car insurance policy.
“Simply using a frost guard, a defogger or even homemade de-icer – lukewarm water mixed with rubbing alcohol.”
Experts at LeaseCar said mixing water and rubbing alcohol would make ice “peel right off” a car windscreen.
A spokesperson for LeaseCar added: “We’ve all been there. You’re running late for work in the morning and dash outside to find Jack Frost has paid a visit.
“But to make matters worse, you’ve ran out of de-icer spray.
“Instead of frantically scraping away at a thick layer of ice that refuses to budge, there are some homemade formulas you can make with common kitchen items that will help to quick things up.
“These present much more eco-friendly options too, as shop-bought de-icers emit lots of chemicals into the atmosphere.”
Experts at Living on a Dime also urged drivers to use these simple ingredients to make a homemade solution.
They urged drivers to give the bottle a shake before applying.
After a few minutes, the solutions should turn the ice into slush which can be removed in seconds using your windscreen wipers.
Drivers can also spray the solution onto a car the night before to limit the effects of a winter freeze.
