This Sporting Life: looking through Gerry Cranham’s lens – in pictures

This frame was taken by Gerry as Geoff Hurst scored the fourth England goal in the World Cup final. It sums up an outpouring of emotion that was rare in English men from that era: Alf Ramsey’s attempt to remain modest in victory and the anguished look on the face of Jimmy Greaves, the man who’d been left out and had to watch Hurst, his replacement, score a hat-trick. The physiotherapist Harold Shepherdson, pictured punching the air, was later asked what Ramsey had said to him as he leaped for joy and the reply was along the lines of: “Sit down man, you look a fool.”
