Man Utd hero Steve Bruce pushing for interim manager role as agent contacts club

Manchester United hero Steve Bruce is apparently pushing for a move to Old Trafford after his agent contacted the Red Devils about taking over as the club’s interim manager. United are on the lookout for a new boss after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday morning.

Bruce is currently without a club after being sacked by Newcastle last month in the wake of their mega-money takeover.

The 60-year-old had been in charge at St James’ Park for just over two years but was given his marching orders after failing to win a game all season.

The Red Devils appointed Michael Carrick as their caretaker boss at the weekend but are looking for someone to take the helm until the end of the campaign.

United chiefs have apparently drawn-up a shortlist of five potential candidates to see them through until May.

Ralf Rangnick, Ernesto Valverde, Rudi Garcia and Lucien Favre are all thought to be in the running to land the top job, while the club are also considering sticking with Carrick.

“It’s not just about me – it’s taken its toll on my whole family because they are all Geordies and I can’t ignore that.

“They have been worried about me, especially my wife Jan. What an amazing woman she is, incredible – she’s just a fantastic woman, wife and mother and grandmother.

“She dealt with the death of my parents, hers have not been very well. And then she had me to worry about and what I’ve been going through the last couple of years.

“I’m 60 years old and I don’t know if I want to put her through it again.

“We’ve got a good life so, yeah, this will probably be me done as a manager – until I get a phone call from a chairman somewhere asking if I can give them a hand. Never say never – I’ve learnt that.”

United began life under Carrick with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

And the former England midfielder is likely to still be in charge by the time the Red Devils travel to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
