First look at Julia Garner as Anna Sorokin, NYC’s ‘biggest con woman’

Infamous “fake heiress” Anna Sorokin is getting her close-up again — sort of.

A trailer for the Netflix series, “Inventing Anna,” based on the Soho grifter’s case, has been released. A 50-second teaser gives a sneak peek into director Shonda Rhimes’ multipart exploration of the notorious fraudster, which promises an upbeat TV adaption of the Russian-born German’s convincing connivery.

Julia Garner, 27, stars as the pretend socialite, who went by Anna Delvey while she swindled Manhattan’s elite out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The rest of the cast includes Laverne Cox, Arian Moayed, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, Anders Holm, Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Anna Chlumsky.

The show is set to premiere on Netflix on Feb. 11, 2022, and is part of Rhimes’ deal with the streaming giant.

“But is Anna New York’s biggest con woman, or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream?” the Netflix synopsis ponders, adding that the miniseries will significantly explore the Instagram-famous faux-blue-blood’s relationship with the reporter investigating her, portrayed by Chlumsky.

The series is based on the convicted scammer’s successful New York City social heist, for which she was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison. Sorokin was convicted in 2019 of grand larceny and other raps for stealing $200,000 from businesses and for fraudulently trying to score a $22 million loan to launch a Manhattan art club.

However, Sorokin was released in February for good behavior, claiming she was a celebrity in prison, before being taken back into custody for visa issues.

The source material for the show will work from Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine article “How an Aspiring ‘It’ Girl Tricked New York’s Party People — and its Banks.” Pressler also wrote the article that inspired the 2019 Jennifer Lopez film “Hustlers.”

Sorokin, who remains in ICE custody, insists that she had no ill will when she fooled her community, various hotels, banks and private jet operators out of all that cash.

“I never had a fraudulent intent … And I guess that’s what should really count,” she said in a September interview. “I would like to show the world that I’m not this dumb, greedy person that they portrayed me to be.”

As for what the future holds for her, she responded, “I guess it remains to be seen.”
