Tiger Woods has posted a video of him hitting golf balls for the first time since his dramatic car crash in February, sparking hopes of a comeback to the sport.

The legendary golfer broke both his legs in a horror accident in Los Angeles nine months ago, and has been out of action since.

Updates on his health and recovery have been few and far between, but it now appears he is well enough to be striking balls again.

Woods posted a video to his 2.7million followers on Instagram, simply captioned: ‘Making progress,’ with more than 850,000 likes and almost 9,000 comments already.

The clip shows the 45-year-old with a protective cast on his right leg, but still displaying that trademark smooth swing.

The American icon has barely been seen since the crash, but was pictured last month watching his son play in a heartening sight for fans of the sport.

Pictures of him walking around with girlfriend Erica without the aid of crutches suggests he is now able to enjoy at least a quality of life, the first item on the wishlist once the shocking photographs of the car crash emerged.

Although golf fans have heard about the inspirational role he played behind the scenes at the Ryder Cup and seen some nostalgic pictures about the 25th anniversary of his first victory on tour in Las Vegas, seeing him play is encouraging.

However, it would be an ominous sign regarding any foreseeable prospect of a return to tournament play if he wasn’t able to make it back before his 46th birthday.
