Paris Hilton says her mother Kathy 'changes the subject' when discussing Provo Canyon School

Paris Hilton revealed her mother, Kathy, has been unwilling to discuss her traumatic experiences at Provo Canyon School during an episode of her Peacock series Paris In Love.

The 40-year-old socialite discussed her family’s approach to her past during a sit-down with her younger brother Barron, and she recalled the events that led her parents to enroll her in the controversial institution.

The reality television personality told People that her mother, 62, had been unwilling to speak to her regarding her time at the school.

‘Every time I bring up Provo, my mom changes the subject. I don’t want to hurt her feelings, I don’t want to upset her,’ she said.

Hilton then noted that Kathy’s personality was naturally upbeat and that she was unaccustomed to dealing with more serious topics.

‘I’ve never really had a serious, deep conversation about things like that. She doesn’t like to think about that. She just likes to be happy. I don’t want to kill her vibe,’ she said. 

The socialite also noted that he parents ‘don’t like talking about things — you know, Mom is just so fun and chill, she doesn’t really like to get serious.’

Hilton went on to describe the circumstances that led her enrollment at Provo Canyon School, which has since become embroiled in a controversy regarding the alleged mistreatment of its students. 

She recalled: ‘When I was 16, we moved to New York. I started sneaking out at night, ditching school. My parents got really scared, so they sent me to a boarding school. 

‘They didn’t realize it was pure torture camp. I was verbally, physically, emotionally, psychologically abused on a daily basis,’ she added.

Hilton then remarked that, although her mother and father felt remorse for enrolling her in the school, they remained willfully unaware of the more shocking details of her experience.

‘I know that my parents feel bad and regret sending me to Provo, but I don’t think that they really understand what I went through because they never watched [This Is Paris]. So they don’t really know all the details,’ she stated.  

The socialite added: ‘I just feel like they just don’t want to think about it, just like I didn’t want to think about it and didn’t talk about it for 20 years.’

Hilton expressed that she still found it hard to speak about her alleged mistreatment at the school, stating: ‘It’s painful to think about, to like, open that up.’

She went on to express that she desperately wanted to speak to her parents about her experience in an effort to heal further.

‘I wish we could just one day sit down and have a real conversation. For so long, since I was a teenager, I’ve really been just holding all this in,’ she stated.

Hilton added: ‘I really just wish we could just talk about it so I can just let it go. Because I feel like I don’t know if I’ll fully ever release this unless we speak about it.’
