St. John’s basketball player Stef Smith was harassed by Indiana fans with vulgar chants of ‘sloppy seconds’ throughout Monday’s loss in Bloomington because he currently dates the ex-girlfriend of Hoosiers star Trayce Jackson-Davis.
A sellout crowd of more than 17,000 directed the rallying cry at Smith, a transfer from Vermont, at various times in the Red Storm’s 76-74 defeat. School spokespeople did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for a statement.
The girlfriend, University of Vermont basketball player Emma Utterback, wasn’t in attendance but her family was, according to the New York Post.

Hoosiers fans only seemed to intensify the chants whenever Smith stepped to the free throw line, not that he was bothered. The fifth-year senior from Canada made 5 of 6 free throws and finished with 16 points as St. John’s nearly pulled off an improbable 13-point comeback.
‘I like to stay even-keel,’ Smith said afterwards, as quoted by the New York Post. ‘I always do my meditation before games. That kind of helps me, especially when I did struggle in the first half. I kind of put that to the side and kept playing.
‘This is my fifth year playing college basketball. I’ve experienced it all.’
Smith’s strong second half was made even more impressive by the fact that it came after a slow start in the most hostile of venues.
‘I’ve played in great environments, I’ve played at Kansas,’ Smith said. ‘I’ve played in the [NCAA] Tournament against Florida State. The biggest thing is to just lock in and block out all of the outside noise, especially at the free-throw line you have to lock in and focus on what you have to do.

After the game, Smith said: ‘I’ve played in great environments, I’ve played at Kansas. I’ve played in the [NCAA] Tournament against Florida State. ‘We knew it was going to be a tough crowd, not just on me, but everybody. We had to stick together and we fought back in the second half. I’m really proud of the way we played in the second half.’
As for Jackson-Davis, the 6-foot-9 forward from Greenwood, Indiana poured in a team-high 18 points to go with 10 rebounds and two blocks.
