Covid crisis in Europe: FIFTH wave fears surge – warning unvaccinated are 'viral bombs'

In France, as in Italy and Germany, the number of reported daily Covid cases are on the up, although deaths remain relatively low. In spite of this apparent contraction, more and more officials argue that the unvaccinated should be locked down – prevented from living their lives as normal while those who have received Covid vaccines live more freely.

Renaud Muselier, President of France’s Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region, told Franceinfo on Tuesday morning that “the non-vaccinated are viral bombs”.

He called for the country’s vaccine passport scheme to be updated, requiring citizens to not only have received two Covid vaccine doses but also a booster dose in order to attend restaurants, hospitals and shopping malls.

He said: “We must ensure that those who are vaccinated with a third dose have access to life. It will allow those who want to live to live and not block everyone else.”

But critics argue that measures being introduced across Europe that single out the unvaccinated from the rest of society are equal to a “medical apartheid”.

Frederic Boccaletti, a councillor in the PACA region, took to Twitter to brand Mr Muselier’s proposals as a form of “health discrimination”.

He wrote: “When you think that Renaud Muselier, vaccinated twice… contaminated 12 people who had themselves both jabs… what an irony!

“Viral bombs are also in the vaccinated people. STOP health discrimination!”

Mr Muselier also believes that a Covid booster vaccine should be made mandatory for healthcare workers.

Italy is also mulling a lockdown of the unvaccinated, with the governors of five Italian states backing such plans.

Governor Massimiliano Fedriga of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, supported by at least four other governors, said: “Eventual new lockdowns should not have to be suffered by those who are vaccinated.

“Restrictions should only apply to those who are not immunised.”

Some UK officials are also adamant that more should be done to prevent further increases in Covid cases.

Pressure group Independent Sage believes the Government should implement its winter ‘Plan B’ right away.

This would see the introduction of vaccine passports, along with the return of face mask mandates and work from home guidelines.
