The father, 45, is believed to have stabbed himself after carrying out the horrific attack.

The children, who are both under the age of 10, were rushed to a hospital in a helicopter.

But the younger of the two siblings did not survive the night while the other child has life-threatening injuries, police said.

A passerby found the children lying on the ground outside the block of flats and alerted police at around 9.45pm yesterday.

Police spokesperson Helena Boström Thomas said: ‘We suspect that they have fallen from a great height.’

Forensic investigators said blood was found in the flat and the suspects’ clothes have been taken for examination.

A neighbour said they often heard commotion in the flat and had previously alerted the landlord.

He told Expressen: ‘It was all the time. We have complained that this is the case. We complained to the landlord as well.

‘There’s something wrong with that apartment. But we can not just knock and ask.’

He added that he heard noises in the flat on Sunday before police arrived.

He said: ‘At 5pm we heard the man screaming and crying. We thought it was as usual, so we ignored it. Later they cried and ran again, furniture was moved.’

Another neighbour said she knew the family and described them as ‘very nice’.

She said: ‘I have not talked to them much, but they used to keep doors open and such.’

Another said: ‘I met him in the elevator sometimes. Dad was very nice and accommodating.’

But others described the father as ‘strange’.

One man who lives in the apartment block said they heard a sound at 9.30pm but said it was very brief and he did not think much about it.
