After its hotly-anticipated launch last month, Sky Glass is now shipping to select customers across the UK with this connected 4K TV offering a Sky Q-style experience without having to install a dish on your walls. The all-in-one system includes everything you need for a nightly boxset binge, so there’s no need for an additional set-top box or an unsightly mass of cables sprouting from the back of your telly. Users are even treated to a Dolby Atmos compatible soundbar, which sits inside the QLED TV design.
Everything you want to watch is beamed to the screen via the web with all the usual live channels, such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky Max available in full HD. If you want to view programmes after they have first aired there’s full access to all the most popular catch-up services allowing you to watch on-demand content without needing to record it onto a hard drive – something Sky Glass doesn’t include.
It’s all clever stuff, but it seems Sky Glass is about to get some big improvements. Sky has recently revealed to Express.co.uk that a major update is coming to its new TV which will not only bring additional content to the display but also boost the picture quality.
Once the software upgrade arrives in the coming weeks, owners will get full access to Apple TV+ without needing a separate Apple TV set-top box. This streaming service not only lets you rent and buy movies but also watch a swathe of content such as Ted Lasso and The Morning Show for a small monthly fee.
Along with Apple TV+ arriving on Sky Glass, the UHD Quantum Dot screen is also set for a boost with the update bringing improvements to Sky’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture quality, increasing brightness and enhancing the perception of contrast and colour on the TV.
If you weren’t already aware, HDR brings a picture packed with far greater detail and seriously rich colours, especially in the darkest and lightest parts of the screen. If you watch a lot of documentaries or blockbuster films, you’ll immediately see the difference. That’s because there’s no loss in detail when scenes take place in places with a stark contrast between light and dark.
If you’re hoping to get Sky Glass then there is currently a queue to own it. Sky says that Diamond and Platinum tier customers who’ve been with the firm for more than 8 years are getting this clever telly first.
This will then be followed by more customers in the coming months.
Sky Glass comes in three sizes (small 43-inch, medium 55-inch and large 65-inch) with prices starting from £13 per month. Those who buy this television can also add Sky’s new Stream Pucks to their bill which bring the firm’s catalogue of content and features to other standard TVs you may already own.
