From November 15, new driving rules mean anyone who passed their test from January 1 1997 will be allowed to tow trailers of up to 3,500kg. Under current rules, only drivers issued their licence before this date can tow the heavier weights for things like caravans.
However, under the new rules, an extra test to allow drivers to tow heavier weights will not be mandatory.
Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA said drivers should still be able to pay for private sessions if they want to before towing a heavier trailer or caravan.
He said: “The Government’s intention is to create a non-compulsory course which people can opt to take, but doing so may lead to cheaper insurance.
“My guess is that even if this doesn’t become reality, drivers could still approach trailer training companies and pay for a private session to provide training and confidence to those that want it.”
