New car tax changes attacked as 'utterly ridiculous' and simple 'daylight robbery'

Sadiq Khan’s new Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) expansion has seen the scheme stretch from Central London to all roads in the North and South Circular. This means thousands of drivers face an extra £12.50 to use the roads if their cars are not compliant with emissions standards.

The new fee is issued on top of the existing Congestion Charge, putting rates up to £27.50 per day for some road users.

However, Express readers have hit back at the scheme with some calling the plans a “money grab”.

Reader an1mal said: “Isn’t that the plan, get people off the road apart from those that can afford it.”

Express reader Captain Scarlet said: “Will Khan still drive his diesel Range Rover with his security following.

He said: “Like to know how many people who are moaning voted him in.

“He told you all, what his plans was!

“I voted against him just for that one plan.”

Rob Ingram added: “This is what happens when you vote Labour.”

“I don’t mean with protests but just move jobs and house to the rest of the country.

“It’s not easy but think of how much better off hospitals, care homes and so on would be.”

Transport for London says the aim of the expanded ULEZ is to help reduce harmful Nitrogen Dioxide by around 30 percent in London.

They warn many drivers who live in the expanded ULEZ have already taken action to prepare for the new scheme.

TfL says more than 80 percent of vehicles are now compliant, up from 39 percent in February 2017 when the scheme was first announced.
