Russia scrambles fighter jet to remove US bomber – despite not breaching border

A MiG-31 fighter jet was scrambled to escort a US B-1B bomber over the Sea of Japan. The bomber jet did not breach Russia’s border. This comes just days after a US destroyer attempted to violated Russian territorial waters.

According to Russia’s National Defense Management Center, an aerial target was detected approaching the border.

A MiG from the Eastern Military District’s air defence system was soon dispatched.

The ministry said in a statement: “A MiG-31 fighter was scrambled to identify the aerial target and prevent it from violating the Russian state border.”

The Russian government insisted it acted within full compliance with the international rules of using the airspace.

The US Navy was accused of sending a vessel into the waters during military drills.

The Russian Defence Ministry released video footage showing the USS Chafee with anti-submarine vessel, Admiral Tributs.

The ministry said the waters were closed due to the artillery fire.

America’s military attacher was summoned due to the incursion.

A US Naval spokesperson said Russia’s account of the incident had been false.

The told The Independent: “A Russian Udaloy-class destroyer came within approximately 65 yards of USS Chafee (DDG 90) while the ship was preparing for flight operations.

“The interaction was safe and professional.

“Although Russia issued a Notice to Airman and Mariners in this area for later in the day, the NOTAM/NOTMAR was not in effect at the time of the interaction.

“At all times, USS Chafee conducted operations in accordance with international law and custom.

“The United States will continue to fly, sail, and operate where international law allows.”

This is a breaking story, more to follow…
