Newcastle 'in contact' with Timo Werner agent and 'seriously discuss' Philippe Coutinho

Newcastle United are beginning to plan for the future after their takeover from a Saudi-backed consortium made them the richest club in the world. The Magpies have ambitions to become one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and there is no doubt they will be keen to splash the cash on new signings as soon as possible.

They are already being linked with some of the biggest names around, but wil have to wait two-and-a-half months for the January transfer window to open before they begin their spending spree.

And according to German publication BILD, two ambitious targets have already been identified by the powers-that-be at St James’ Park.

One of those is Chelsea forward Timo Werner.

The former RB Leipzig star only joined the Blues last summer, but has failed to show his best form so far in the Premier League.

He was linked with an exit in the most recent transfer window, but instead decided to stay at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI.

However, following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku his game-time is likely to be limited, and the German may fancy the prospect of spearheading the revolution on Tyneside.

BILD note that Werner’s agency already represent Newcastle defender Fabian Schar, and claim that the Magpies are ‘in contact’ with them over their client.

Another man on their radar is reportedly Barcelona outcast and ex-Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian is another who has failed to live up to expectations since his move to the Nou Camp back in 2018.

And given the Catalan giants’ huge financial issues, they are said to be keen to listen to any offers for the 29-year-old, with Newcastle ‘seriously discussing’ a bid.

Whether Coutinho would fancy a move to the north-east remains to be seen, but he could certainly tempted by a big contract offer.

The two players linked highlight the high calibre of player Newcastle will now be targeting given their new-found wealth.

And it is certainly an exciting time to be a fan of the Toon Army.

They will enjoy their first game of the new era at St James’ Park on Sunday when their side host Tottenham.

But it remains to be seen if Steve Bruce is still in charge by then, with the manager tipped for the sack in the coming days.
