With England unable to qualify for the World Cup until next month’s international break, he said: ‘I want to make sure that I am making the right decisions for the right reasons. We have happily parked that for the time being.

‘The discussions are very much open and (FA chief executive) Mark Bullingham has been really, really supportive. But I have really felt getting the country to the World Cup was the priority. We can look at everything in the next few weeks.’

Southgate confirmed he will make a raft of changes to his team to face Hungary at Wembley on Tuesday night, meaning that some of the stars of Saturday’s win in Andorra are sweating on their places.

‘We will definitely make changes,’ said Southgate. ‘I have a headache and commit a crime every time I pick a team.’
