‘That ‘70s Show’ gets spinoff — ‘That ‘90s Show’ — with some of original cast

Welcome to the ’90s.

The creators of “That ’70s Show” have announced a new sitcom full of angsty teenagers mulling over the decade in which they live.

A spinoff of “That ’70s Show” called “That ’90s Show” is coming to Netflix with the original series’ creators, Bonnie and Terry Turner.

They’re not the only familiar names, though. Two of the Fox sitcom’s original stars, Kurtwood Smith (Red Forman) and Debra Jo Rupp (Kitty Forman), will be coming back to the series. Ten episodes have been ordered by the streaming service.

The official description reads: “Hello, Wisconsin! It’s 1995 and Leia Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, is visiting her grandparents for the summer where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place kids under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red. Sex, drugs and rock ’n roll never dies, it just changes clothes.”

The original series ran from 1998 until 2006 for eight seasons on Fox. The show focused on a group of teenage friends living in the fake Wisconsin town as they hang out, party and discuss the meaning of life in the Formans’ basement.

The cast included Topher Grace (Eric Forman), Mila Kunis (Jackie Burkhart), Ashton Kutcher (Michael Kelso), Laura Prepon (Donna Pinciotti), Danny Masterson (Steven Hyde) and Wilmer Valderrama (Fez).

In 2002, Fox famously debuted the failed series “That ’80s Show.” While the show wasn’t exactly a spinoff, it took much influence from the original series.

“That ’70s Show” star Tanya Roberts, who played Donna’s mother Midge, passed away in January 2021. The news of her death was widely misconstrued and many thought she had died earlier than what her publicist said.

Several of her cast members mourned the loss. “I was so sad to hear that Tanya Roberts has passed away. She was a Bond girl, one of Charlie’s Angels, and truly a delightful person to work with,” wrote Grace wrote on social media at the time. “I had never acted before and, to be honest, a little nervous around her. But she couldn’t have been kinder. We’ll miss you Midge.”

“Tanya had a big deep hearty laugh. She was all instinct and beauty. In the first season of 70’s we had a scene in the kitchen, drinking cocktails and laughing together,” Rupp added. “She laughed, spit her drink in my face, apologized profusely and did it 3 more times. I loved her. RIP beauty.”
