‘The View’ Hosts Grill Former White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah: “An Era of Lies and Craziness”

Today, The View‘s hosts grilled their guest co-host, former White House communications director Alyssa Farah, about her time working for former President Donald Trump during, as moderator Whoopi Goldberg put it, “an era of lies and craziness.”

Farah explained that although she didn’t vote for Trump in 2016, she took the opportunity to work in the White House from April to November 2020 in hopes of helping the country deal with “unprecedented crises.”

Although she called the job “incredibly challenging,” Farah added that she was proud of her role. “I always gave my best counsel to the president,” she said. “Sometimes that meant being like a skunk at a garden party… but that’s the job.”

Host Sunny Hostin pressed Farah on her decision to join the Trump White House, saying, “You joined in April 2020, that’s four years in. You knew who this person is, and you’re working for him.”

When Farah noted that she’d previously served as former Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary for two years, Hostin replied, “So you’re not working for Darth Vader, but you’re a stormtrooper.”

Farah responded that while she believed in Trump’s economic and national security agendas, she had no illusion about the man he was.

“I don’t think it would’ve been a good thing to have a federal government run for four years, once Donald Trump was the commander-in-chief, staffed by Steve Bannons, or Steve Bannon miniatures,” she said. “I think having people of good conscience, who believe in public service, who believe in working with Democrats, working with independents in those roles, is a good thing, not a bad thing.”

Farah added that many of the 74 million Americans who voted for Trump believed in his economic policies, noting that her “middle-class” relative’s 401k increased by over 20 percent under the administration.

“But on whose back?” asked Goldberg.

According to Farah, it’s worth crediting some of the “smart, Bush-era policymakers” around Trump, whose work was often hindered by Trump’s more controversial decisions (and by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, acting as a “shadow chief-of-staff”).

“The problem was, you couldn’t get away from policies like the Muslim ban,” Farah said, adding that she wouldn’t support Trump in the future.

“We’ve gotta move on from this era,” she concluded.
