Squid Game: Who runs Squid Game? Who is The Front Man?

Squid Game is a South Korean thriller streaming on Netflix, with contestants making their way through a maze of children’s games to win big money and if they don’t, deadly consequences lie in store. Only a crazed mastermind would allow themselves to control the fate of the 456 participants involved in the experiment. Here is everything you need to know about the powerhouse behind the deadly survival challenge and the identity of the man in the mask on the TV show.

Who runs the Squid Game?

As the contestants were killed off one after another, there was one player who reined supreme throughout the challenges.

Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-Jae), also known as player 456 was the triumphant player who got his hands on $38.7 million.

Unfortunately, the events and trauma he was put through during the tournament meant when viewers saw him a year later, he had not spent any of the prize money.

However, in a finale twist, he is sent a gold game invitation and when he arrives at the destination in the instructions, he discovers who was in control of the game the whole time.

It was player 001, Oh Il-nam (Oh Yeong-su) who was thought to have died in episode six and was battling the impact of a brain tumour.

What transpired as the two men spoke was although he was dying, Il-nam was also super rich and had created the game as a way to entertain those with too much money to bear.

He explains to Gi-hun those who are super-wealthy and bored and those who are living in poverty both had monotonous lives.

Therefore, those who needed the money the most were cast as the contestants to give the super-rich some stimulus to enjoy.

It was also a test to see if humanity did have any goodness left in it as Il-nam said although there was so much blood-shed, each contestant still carried on to make a bid for the prize money.

His identity is kept a secret until episode eight of season one when it’s revealed he is In-ho (Lee Byung-hun).

He is the missing brother of police officer Detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-Joon) who snuck into the game as a guard originally.

Jun-ho’s mission took many twists as it was discovered his missing sibling actually won the Squid Game in 2015.

However, he was discovered to be an intruder and once he fled to a nearby island, he was confronted by the Front Man and a group of red workers.

The Front Man took off his mask and revealed himself to be In-ho and his brother is left confused as to why his sibling had become part of the network.

Before he can get any answers, Jun-ho is shot in the shoulder by his brother and falls off of a steep cliff.

He is not the true host of the games, with flashbacks seeing Il-nam asking his co-star to take on the main responsibilities.

Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
