Arsenal reportedly made a £34m bid for Real Madrid star Marco Asensio in the summer but it was turned down after he was assured of his future in the Spanish capital.

Asensio has made seven appearances in all competitions so far this season after new Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti insisted he was part of his first-team plans.

The Gunners, who did land Martin Odegaard from the Spanish giants in the summer, were most keen on Asensio and had a bid turned down according to Spanish radio station Cadena Sur as reported in The Sun, with Tottenham and AC Milan also interested in a deal.

The report details that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is still keen on signing Asensio in January however.

Arteta did win the race for Norwegian international Odegaard for £30m after he spent last season on loan at the Emirates Stadium.

Asensio, meanwhile, scored a hat-trick for Madrid against Real Mallorca last week but has so far been in and out of the team under Ancelotti.

He missed out on selection for Spain’s Euro 2020 squad after a difficult few years which started with a year-long knee injury first picked up in the summer of 2019, in a pre-season friendly against Arsenal.

Asensio is still said to be assessing his options in the linger-term – his contract is up in the summer of 2023.

Madrid are also considering how best to utilise Asensio, given their primary aim of landing PSG’s Kylian Mbappe.

Should Asensio be made available in January, Premier League trio Leeds, Leicester and Everton are also said to be eyeing a potential deal for the Spanish international, who has made 26 appearances for his country.
