The Witcher books: reading order and where to start

The Witcher season 2 is almost here: It will release on Netflix on December 17, 2021. While you wait, why not check out the source material? There are tons of Witcher books to read, and aside from being fun to read for their own sake, it’s always fun to see how a TV or film adaptation works with material you’re familiar with.

It’s not quite as easy as one, two, three, though. The series started as a set of short stories in the ’80s for a Polish fantasy magazine, and the initial tale came third in their competition to find new ideas and writers. The stories were so popular they then went on to spawn full-length novels, which were then published in Polish in 1993. The books were released in English a bit late, from 2007, with Danusia Stok translating the first two and David French taking over duties for the third book. The books then eventually became the games (and now Netflix show) we know and love.
