Here’s a rundown of the issues facing the Nets as training camp nears:
Best battle
There aren’t many position battles on this fairly set roster. One is incumbent Blake Griffin versus LaMarcus Aldridge (returning from a cardiac issue) for the starting center spot.
Most intriguing rookie
Cam Thomas was the top scorer in summer league and a likely steal at No. 27 overall. But can he guard and pass enough to earn minutes?
Story to watch develop
Health. Two of the Big 3 were hurt to close last season. Keeping them fit will tell the story of this upcoming one.
Coach’s toughest challenge
If Steve Nash can get this team to defend to at least an average level, and figure out the best front-court rotation, he could win Coach Of the Year.
Most intriguing newcomer
James Johnson. Aldridge obviously bears watching and Patty Mills could see more minutes. But how can a black belt who is a pro kickboxer and fought MMA not go over in Brooklyn?
Most notable absence
Jeff Green. His 68 games played last year were one behind Joe Harris for the team lead, and he was the grown-up in the room who was respected by everybody.
Biggest comeback
Aldridge. He was stellar in his first four games with the Nets before an irregular heartbeat in the fifth forced him into retirement. His return — 49 points shy of 20,000 — transcends the norm.
Don’t be surprised if …
Injuries hit yet again. The Nets have eight players over 30, and all of them could be in the rotation, along with 29-year-old and oft-injured Kyrie Irving.
