Mario movie: Chris Pratt teases voice for legendary video game character

Overnight Nintendo announced in their latest Nintendo Direct some new details about the upcoming Mario movie. The video game company revealed that the movie is currently planned to be released over Christmas 2022, meaning gamers have some time to wait until they see Pratt take on the Italian plumber’s character. In the meantime, Pratt gave some details about how he might sound.

Speaking out on his Instagram account, Pratt said: “It’s-a me, a-Mario,” before laughing.

He then added: “That’s not the voice. You’ll have to wait to hear the voice.”

With this, he assured fans: “We’ve been working hard at it, and I’m really excited to announce that I’m going to be the voice of that video game that I dreamed about playing as a kid. Dreams come true.”

The Marvel actor also recalled yearning to play the 1985 arcade game Super Mario Bros.

Pratt told his 33 million followers: “There was this coin-operated laundromat near my house, and it had Super Mario Bros, the original arcade game. I loved that game.

“I never had a quarter, it felt like… I’d steal them from the wishing well! It just dawned on me right now… The quarter I stole out of the wishing well to play Super Mario Bros has come true, that I get to be the voice of Mario, but I clearly stole someone else’s wish.

“So, just waiting for that row of karma dominoes to come crashing down on me. But, as it is right now, it’s-a me, a-Mario!”

Pratt wasn’t the only Hollywood A-lister to be announced to be in the upcoming Mario film.

Pratt’s Mario will be going up against Bowser, who will be played by Jack Black.

He will no doubt be saving Princess Peach, who will be played by Anya Taylor Joy, of Queens Gambit fame.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Charlie Day joins as Luigi, while Keegan-Michael Key takes on the Super Mario Bros’ pal, Toad.

Oddly enough, Seth Rogen is playing Donkey Kong. Who saw that one coming?

The Nintendo movie is being produced alongside Illumination and Universal Pictures.

Illumination’s Founder and CEO – and outside director of Nintendo – Chris Meledandri, said: “Mario and Luigi are two of the most beloved heroes in all of popular culture, and we are honoured to have the unique opportunity to work so closely with Shigeru Miyamoto and the widely imaginative team at Nintendo to bring these characters to life in an animated movie, unlike any film Illumination has made to date.”

Nintendo director Shigeru Miyamoto added: “We are collaborating with Chris and his experienced team to not just create a character licensed film, but a new piece of entertainment which brings Super Mario Bros to life on the screen, and allows everyone to enjoy whether or not they know about the game.

“The production so far is constructive and going very well, and both parties are learning a lot from each other.”

Miyamoto added: “We humbly ask that fans wait just a little longer for the premiere, and we hope they look forward to seeing the unique characters from Super Mario Bros on the big screen.”

There was previously a Super Mario Bros live-action movie in 1993, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario Mario and Luigi Mario respectively.

The film is renowned for being a financial bomb.

The Super Mario movie is due out in December, 2022.
