Florida day care worker accused of breaking baby’s leg

A Florida day care worker has been charged with child abuse after being caught on video slapping a 4-month-old and twisting the baby’s leg so hard that it broke, police said.

Thalia Camarillo, 42, was accused of attacking the baby at the Laugh N Learn Academy in Bradenton on Sept. 16, according to the Bradenton Herald.

Officers were called to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where the baby was taken by a family member, after medical workers suspected child abuse, police spokesman Capt. Brian Thiers told the paper.

Investigators determined that the baby had been abused at Laugh N Learn, across the street from the hospital, he said.

The child was then transferred to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg due to the severity of the injuries.

Detectives obtained a search warrant to get the facility to hand over surveillance camera footage, which shows the suspect slapping the baby several times with an open hand before twisting the baby’s right leg, police said.

Camarillo was charged Wednesday with aggravated child abuse, a first-degree felony.

“This investigation is still continuing,” Thiers said.
