“Britney vs Spears” is coming to Netflix and is set to reveal “confidential” information about the singer’s 13-year conservatorship.
The streaming service released a full-length trailer on Wednesday for the new documentary, which drops Sept. 28.
“It’s been 13 years and it’s enough,” Spears’ voice can be heard saying in the teaser.
The film is directed by Erin Lee Carr and has been in the works for 18 months, though being released after the FX documentary “Framing Britney Spears.”
“This is a two-and-a-half years-long investigative process into the conservatorship,” Carr told the Los Angeles Times. “There has been an amazing amount of coverage, but that’s a really long time to be focused on this. We wanted to be the definitive place to understand the beginning, middle and hopefully what we will find out as the end of this saga.”
The teaser features voiceovers from interviews in which people discuss the 39-year-old’s struggles and family issues. “Britney’s never had one person she could trust. Not Mom. Not Dad,” one person said in the trailer. Another added, “Britney had a fear that her family would barge in and take everything.”
While Spears’ family has nothing to do with the Netflix doc — “No one would talk,” a voice says — it will feature other players who know the pop star’s problems, including one person “very close to the conservatorship” who “leaked” a “confidential report.”
One of the voices is of Spears’ ex, paparazzo Adnan Ghalib, along with an attorney and a medical professional. Netflix also released photos, according to Variety, of Spears’ former assistant, Felicia Culotta.
“The world knows Britney Spears: performer, artist, icon,” the official summary from Netflix reads. “But in the last few years, her name has been publicly tied to another, more mysterious term: conservatorship.”
“Britney vs Spears” tells the explosive story of Britney’s life and her public and private search for freedom. Featuring years-long investigative work, exclusive interviews and new documents, this Netflix feature film paints a thorough portrait of the pop star’s trajectory from girl next door to a woman trapped by fame and family and her own legal status. It shows Britney’s life without utilizing the traumatic images that have previously defined her,” the synopsis continued.
The first teaser was released yesterday and showed an audio recording of the singer leaving a message for her attorney in 2009.
The mother of two’s father, Jamie Spears, has been in charge of her estate and finances since 2008. He filed a petition earlier this month to end the conservatorship.
The next court date in the “Toxic” songstress’ case is scheduled for Sept. 29.
