Pirates of the Caribbean: Johnny Depp 'hopeful' he will return as Jack Sparrow

The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been left completely up in the air following the release of the fifth movie, Salazar’s Revenge. The 2017 movie was the least successful picture in the Disney franchise, grossing the least of all the sequels since Curse of the Black Pearl. Since then, Johnny Depp has reportedly been taken out of the franchise’s future.

A number of projects set in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe are reportedly in the works, including a sequel to Salazar’s Revenge.

At the moment, it is uncertain whether Depp will be making a return to the Disney series, but a new report reveals he is looking to make a comeback.

The report says Depp is “still holding out hope” he’ll be brought back to the series in “some capacity”.

It went on to suggest he could either make a “brief cameo” in the film or a “larger supporting part” in the as-of-yet unannounced movie. (Via We Got This Covered)

Depp has been playing Jack Sparrow since the Disney series’ first movie, Curse of the Black Pearl.

He is also the only actor who has appeared in every Pirates movie since its release.

However, executive producer for the series, Jerry Bruckheimer, hinted the star might not be making a return in future films.

Speaking about Pirates 6 in 2019, he said: “We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it. We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”

Robbie said: “It’s too early to talk about it. I love Christina, obviously.

“I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process. We’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.”

Earlier this month reports surfaced that a third new Pirates film is being developed by Disney.

The new unnamed film is reportedly going to be released on Disney Plus, avoiding cinemas entirely.

It is thought this new Pirates movie will focus on a new collection of characters set in the Disney universe.

That does not mean, however, that Depp and other actors from the franchise – Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, et al – will not be making an appearance.

Until an official announcement fans will have to wait and see what is next for Captain Jack Sparrow.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.
