Man Utd POLL: Who is United's best ever No 7? Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona among icons

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s sensational return to Manchester United in the summer, questions regarding his shirt number immediately entered the fray. Ronaldo has built his brand ‘CR7’ on the iconic legacy trailblazed with the number seven on his back.

Upon his Old Trafford return, his trademark number was occupied by another icon of European football, Edinson Cavani.

After the Uruguayan’s impressive debut season at Man United, it wasn’t easy to see him giving up the shirt.

But Daniel James’ £25million deadline day move to Leeds United paved the way for Cavani to inherit number 21, which he bears for his national team.

Ronaldo subsequently reunited with the number seven shirt, much to the delight of the Red Devils faithful, ready for the next chapter of his storied career.

The less said about Angel di Maria, Memphis Depay, and Alexis Sanchez, the better, whilst Cavani broke the ‘curse’ with a solid 2020/21 campaign.

Ronaldo’s return as Man United’s number seven just feels right, though, given the success he enjoyed throughout his first spell in England.

It was a huge decision to hand him the shirt in 2003, given previous wearers included David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and George Best.

Together, the five names above, including Ronaldo, are unanimously considered the greatest number sevens in Man United’s prestigious history.
