'I remember the winter of 1973!' Richard Madeley pinpoints Kwarteng over Ted Heath promise

Richard Madeley has called out Kwasi Kwarteng’s promises that there won’t be any power cuts amid the energy crisis on ITV. The Good Morning Britain host reminded the Government minister of the 1973 winter energy crisis and a promise that the then Prime Minister Ted Head had made and failed to keep to.  It comes after Mr Kwarteng said told MPs that the security of the UK’s supply of gas and electricity “will not fail.”

Mr Madeley told the Minister: “You have absolutely guaranteed in the House of Commons that we are not going to see power cuts.

“I have to tell you I am a lot older than you and I remember Ted Heath saying something very very similar in the 1970s.

“As we went into a terrible bout of strikes mostly and energy shortages we were guaranteed that lights would stay on.

“And you know what they didn’t, and we were sitting that winter I think it was the winter of ’73…’74, we were sitting by candlelight and hurricane lamps for what seemed like months.”
