Emmy Awards 2021: All the winners on TV's big night

Ted Lasso proved to be unstoppable at the 2021 Emmys on Sunday when series star Jason Sudeikis took home the award for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Earlier in the evening, his costar Hannah Waddingham won the first prize of the evening for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the Apple TV+ series, while Brett Goldstein, who stars as an aging soccer player on Ted Lasso, won Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

The 2021 ceremony was taking place at L.A. Live’s Event Deck, a space that offers indoor and outdoor locations for the big event, in Downtown Los Angeles.

Jason opened with a sweet speech as he accepted his award.

‘I would say that this show is about family, this show is about mentors and teachers, this show is about teammates. And I wouldn’t be here without those three, you know things in my life.’

The comedian included a sweet callout for his son Otis, seven, and his daughter Daisy, four, whom he shares with his former partner Olivia Wilde.

The sweet speech was in keeping with the manner of his heartwarming character Ted Lasso, though he got a bit raunchier when he offered thanks for his old SNL boss Lorne Michael, whom he joked ‘went to take a dump now.’

Sudeikis plays the title character on Ted Lasso, an American football coach who’s enlisted to lead an English soccer team despite having no experience with the sport.

Before presenting his award, Legally Blonde star Jennifer Coolidge jokingly handled the Emmy as if she had won, though she can’t be nominated for her series The White Lotus until next year.

Hannah shouted with joy after winning her big award.

‘Jason, you’ve changed my life with this,’ she gushed for her Sudeikis.

She plays the owner of an English soccer team who hires Ted Lasso after wining control of the team in a divorce.

Among the nominees was her costar Juno Temple.

Immediately after Hannah’s big win, Ted Lasso fans scored another goal when comedian and actor Brett Goldstein was announced the winner of the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series trophy.

He dropped the gruff voice he uses for the show for some kind words about his costars.

‘This cast made me sick they’re so good,’ he gushed.

Gillian Anderson looked overjoyed when she was announced as the winner of Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

She dedicated the win to her manager Connie Freiberg, ‘who believed in me when no one else would.’

Gillian stars as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in season four of the hit historical drama. It was the actress’ second win in 24 years following her award for The X-Files.

Kate Winslet’s win for Lead Actress in a Limited Series, Movie or Anthology capped off a string of success for her dark crime drama Mare Of Easttown.

She stars as the detective Mare Sheehan in a Philadelphia suburb struggling to investigate the murder of a teen mother. The case comes at the worst possible moment after she already failed to solve another high-profile crime.

‘Mom, they’re standing up!’ Winslet shouted as the arrived on the stage.

She saluted her fellow nominees ‘in this decade that has to be about women having each other’s backs.’

Her costar Julianne Nicholson marked the first winner for a drama series earlier in the evening with a Best Supporting Actress win for Mare Of Easttown.

She offered kind thanks to Winslet.

‘Man, you’re good at acting,’ she joked, before thanking the Titanic star for talking her into doing the series.

Her costar Evan Peters also won for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for the same show.

Ewan McGregor joked that it was difficult going after Kate Winslet when he won Lead Actor in a Limited Series, Movie or Anthology for Halston, about the famous fashion designer of the same name.

He applauded the ‘professionalism’ and ‘passion’ of the crew that worked in New York City amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and also singled out the show’s executive producer Ryan Murphy.

The first non-acting award of the evening was Writing in a Drama Series, which went to The Crown writer Peter Morgan.

He joked that he’d wasted all 45 seconds allotted for his speech just walking to the stage.

Next up was Directing for a Drama Series, which was awarded to Jessica Hobbs for The Crown.

She paid tribute to her mother, ‘who at 77 is still directing.’

Next up was Tobias Menzies, who won the Supporting Actor prize for The Crown, though he didn’t attend the ceremony.

The writers of HBO’s news–comedy program Last Week Tonight With John Oliver were the big winners of the Writing for a Variety Series honor.

They joked that only the ‘hottest’ of the many writers on the show were allowed to go to the ceremony.

Oliver himself took to the stage to accept the Variety Talk Series award for his newsy program, while Lorne Michaels led a bevy of the staff from the long-running late night institution Saturday Night Live, which won the award for Variety Sketch Series.

The writers of HBO’s acclaimed comedy series Hacks won the award for Writing for a Comedy Series. Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, who wrote the pilot episode, accepted the award.

Lucia Aniello was the second female director to win, this time for directing Hacks.

The first lead award of the evening was for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, which went to veteran star Jean Smart.

Her touching speech included a tribute to her late husband Richard Gilliland, who died earlier this year.

‘I would not be here without him, and without his kind of putting his career on the back burner so I could take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that I have had,’ she said.

She plays an aging stand-up comedian in the series, which follows her attempts to resuscitate her career — or at least stay relevant.

She left the audience with some poetic advice ‘for writers.’

‘Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that is uncomfortable,’ she commanded. ‘I dare you.’

Host Cedric the Entertainer, 57, opened the show with a tribute to the late Biz Markie with a parody of his signature song Just A Friend.

During a press conference in LA earlier this week, the host promised to make the show more ‘fun’ and less ‘stuffy.’

The Television Academy has announced that the September 19 ceremony will once again be slightly different this year, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 73rd annual awards show that celebrates the best of television will have a ‘limited’ number of guests (about 500) and nominees on the red carpet as well as event staff.

The show must go on: The 2021 Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday evening at L.A. Live’s Event Deck, a space that offers indoor and outdoor locations for the production

And attendees have to show proof of vaccination and a negative test result.

The Academy said in a statement: ‘Out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of Emmy nominees, guests and media, the number of production personnel and staff must be limited at this year’s 73rd Emmy Awards.’

They added that there will be a ‘very limited red carpet for talent arrivals’, and a virtual media center to ‘allow media outlets to connect directly with Emmy winners as they are announced.’

The show will also include several satellite events that the telecast will cut to when needed.

The cast and producers of the smash hit series The Crown — starring Claire Foy and Gillian Anderson – are hosting their own Emmy ceremony in London.

Top Chef and Jimmy Kimmel Live will also video conference in.

Celebrity guests are expected to include nominees Kaley Cuoco, who has been nominated for The Flight Attendant, Jean Smart who has won a nod for her role as a stand-up comedienne in Hacks and Allison Janney, who has been singled out for her turn in Mom.

Some of the presenters are Michael Douglas, Taraji P. Henson, Sarah Paulson, Beanie Feldstein, Seth Rogen, Mindy Kaling, Dolly Parton and actresses Awkwafina.

Jennifer Aniston has already said that she will not be attending the event as she wants to be as cautious as she can during the pandemic.

The Crown and The Mandalorian lead the 2021 Emmys nominations, with 24 each.

The Netflix series, based on the British royal family, and Disney Plus’ Star Wars spin-off racked up the impressive number of nods to bring Netflix’s total to 129 with Disney Plus clocking up 71 nominations.

Marvel and Disney Plus’ WandaVision followed with 23 nominations, while Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale received 21.

The Crown co-stars Olivia Colman, who plays Queen Elizabeth, and Emma Corrin (Princess Diana) will compete in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.

Their co-star Josh O’Connor is up for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, for his portrayal of Prince Charles.

He will compete with fellow British actor Rege-Jean Page, for his performance as the Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton.

And Bridgerton and The Crown are up for Drama Series, alongside The Boys, The Handmaid’s Tale, This Is Us, Pose, The Mandalorian and Lovecraft Country.

Mj Rodriguez will make history as the first transgender performer to pick up an Emmy nomination in a major acting category.

The 30-year-old star is nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pose.

The nomination came after the Television Academy’s Board of Governors announced that a nominee or winner of any acting category can request they be referred to as ‘Performer’ on their nomination certificate and Emmy statue, although the categories themselves relating to Actor and Actress won’t change.
