Who Sings the Coach Beard Version of the ‘Ted Lasso’ Theme Song?

Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 9 “Beard After Hours” marks a huge departure for the Apple TV+ series. The standalone episode sheds the show’s cheery attitude (and catchy theme song) to follow Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) on a wild odyssey across London in the wee small hours of the morning. The episode is equal parts haunting and delightful, giving us a close look at what really makes Ted Lasso’s (Jason Sudeikis) right hand man tick. Turns out Coach Beard doesn’t live in the same sitcom space as the rest of the Ted Lasso cast, but in an artsy dramedy established by a radically different version of the show’s opening credits.

This week’s Ted Lasso opens picking up where one of last week’s scenes left off. After AFC Richmond suffered a demoralizing loss to Man City, Coach Beard told Ted he wanted to be alone to “walk” the failure off. “Beard After Hours” shows us exactly what that means. After finding himself lost in a sea of jubilant Man City supporters, Beard takes the Tube back to Richmond. It’s in this moment that the show’s opening credits roll. Instead of Ted’s magic cleaning up the stadium to the sound of Marcus Mumford’s singing, we stay focused on the withdrawn Beard sitting by himself in a crowded train car. The theme song is the same, but sung by a different musician. The song’s arrangement is sparse, acoustic, and far more heartbroken.

But who sings this Coach Beard version of the Ted Lasso theme song? And can you listen to it online? Here’s everything you need to know about the Ted Lasso theme song and how it was changed in Season 2 Episode 9 “Beard After Hours.”

Who Sings the Ted Lasso Theme Song?

If the usual Ted Lasso theme song sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s performed by Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford. The song was written by Mumford and the show’s composer Tom Howe in a “24-hour period.” Mumford told USA Today that after Sudeikis asked him to help out with the show’s theme, “Tom came over to my house at the beginning of January, and it was really fun. I think sometimes good songs don’t take too long. There’s a slightly throwback vibe to it – it’s got a ’60s/’70s feel. We didn’t want to overthink it: It needed to feel natural and not overproduced.”

Fun fact: Tom Howe is the composer responsible for the music on another British hit: The Great British Baking Show.

That said, for this week’s episode, another alt music hero stepped in to record the song…

Who Sings the Ted Lasso Theme Song in “Beard After Hours”?

Jeff Tweedy (once of Wilco fame) sings the Ted Lasso theme song in Season 2 Episode 9 “Beard After Hours.” The new arrangement highlights Beard’s depression and heartache in typical Tweedy-style.

Can I Stream the new Ted Lasso Theme Song?

Yes and no! So all the music from Ted Lasso Season 1 and Season 2 is available on Apple Music, including Jeff Tweedy’s Season 2 Episode 9 version of the theme song. However if you prefer to stream your music on say, Spotify, you’re only going to be able to find the Season 1 soundtrack (as of publication).

Why might that be? I don’t know, but I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that Ted Lasso is an Apple TV+ show and Apple wants to retain some exclusivity on the new version of the song.
