With Nuno having dealt with the Dutchman’s knock, he saw winger Lucas Moura limp off the pitch in the second half after a heavy challenge.

‘It’s been terrible. I must be honest. Let’s not hide behind anything,’ the Spurs boss said.

‘After the Watford game, everything that has happened has not been very good for us.

‘But this is football. And we know it’s a moment we have to overcome.

‘Today, we tried to show the players solutions, thinking about the game on Sunday. But it’s about overcoming obstacles. That will make us stronger for the future, for sure.’

Spurs face a tough trip to London rivals Chelsea on Sunday and could be desperately short of attackers given Heung-Min Son is still recovering from a calf injury. The club are hopeful the South Korean can be fit in time.

Nuno is also still without Cristian Romero, Giovano Lo Celso and Davinson Sanchez as they quarantine in Croatia following their decisions to travel for international duty in South America in defiance of Premier League rules.

When pressed on whether Bergwijn or Moura would be fit for Sunday’s game, he said: ‘Painful, really bad. I cannot tell you. They are being taken care of by the medical department. But it’s been tough.’

Speaking on BT Sport, Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle said Bergwijn’s injury was a major setback given he has had previous issues with his ankles.

‘It’s a real blow for the lad and for Nuno. (It looks like) there’s not much in it, but suddenly he’s hobbling.

‘The problem is he’s twisted the ankle, the very ankle he’s had a problem with. It looks like he’s tweaked it again and that will set him back.

‘I don’t see him playing for a couple of weeks if he’s injured it again. A big shock and a big shame.’
