Merkel's successor ridiculed as own party refuses to use his posters 'Why choose him?!'

Armin Laschet’s hopes of an election victory and chance of being chancellor deplete by the day following news local CDU representatives have refused to use posters with his image on them. Mr Laschet has also been slammed by members of his own party who are worried they may lose their seats because of his unpopularity with the German electorate. The German elections will be held on September 26 with the Angela Merkel successor running out of time to flip public perception.

According to Politico’s poll of polls, the CDU was leading the polls with 36 percent in January this year but has now seen a huge downturn.

Currently, the SPD lead the polls with 25 percent whereas the CDU are on 21 percent.

The growing animosity towards the CDU has been in part blamed on successor Armin Laschet who has failed to make a positive impact on voters.

In August, the CDU distributed 67,000 posters of Mr Laschet across the country however many have noted they would be hard to find.

CDU Saarbrucken official Carsten Baus was reported as saying: “We won’t dump them but we won’t hang them up either.”

Speaking on DW News, host Tim Sebastian spoke with CDU MEP David McAllister about the devastating rejection of Mr Laschet.

Mr Sebastian noted: “The fact is Armin Laschet is not a popular man neither in the country as a whole nor for that matter in your party.

“You even have one or two CDU MPs last month calling for him to step down…

Armin Laschet was voted to be the replacement CDU/CSU party leader back in January, beating the popular Bavarian state minister Markus Soder.

Analysts say Mr Laschet and Ms Merkel are closely politically aligned with his supporters believing he will continue on the work of Ms Merkel once she has left politics.

But voters have not taken to Mr Laschet well as not only do they believe he has made little impact on their votes but has been marred in controversy.

Footage of Mr Laschet visiting flood victims in Germany last month saw him laughing in the background as a speech was being made about the destruction.

Germans were outraged at the video with the hashtag “Laschetlaughing” trending.

Many also compare him with Ms Merkel and believe he struggles in comparison.

Laschet is also the prime minister of Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia with some citizens blaming him for their problems.

All this means is his chances for chancellorship are thinning by the day, especially if the CDU/CSU come out of the September elections with a poor result.
