How to spruce up your home in autumn – seven key tips to 'get your house ready'

An autumn tidy out doesn’t have to involve cleaning the whole house. So, what are the key steps to ensure the house is ready for the coming season?

Highlighting autumn is an ideal time to have a thorough home clean, Kathryn Hall, founder of Kath & Kin, said: “It’s an annual ritual for many to blitz the house each March, but the change in season from warmer to colder months is just as important.

“In fact, maybe even more important. Throughout the summer we enjoy a much more indoor, outdoor living style, which leaves the house in need of a good tidy come autumn time.”

Summer bedding

While some people may have opted for lighter duvets during the summer months, as the temperature begins to drop, warmer bedding will be needed.

Summer bedding can be put away and replaced with a warmer duvet.

Kathryn suggested vacuum packing freshly cleaned summer bedding before storing away the items.

Checking dates in medicine cupboard

Checking the dates of medicine can be easily forgotten, so it’s important any out of date items are thrown away and replaced with the essentials.

Cleaning doors and windows

Giving the front door and windows a good clean saves having to do the work during the winter.

While cleaning the windows inside and out, it’s worth checking they are fitted properly to ensure heat won’t escape during the colder months.

While having a clear out, Kathryn also advised cleaning a child’s bedroom.

It provides a good opportunity to hoover under the bed and wiping over furniture.

She suggested sorting through any unwanted items which could be donated or thrown away.

“Autumn doesn’t have to be about the long dark nights and cold weather,” Kathryn said. “Get your home ready for the seasonal change and look forward to all the lovely things autumn has to offer.”
