‘Elegant’: Swedish Princess Victoria’s ‘glittering’ tiara steeped in royal history

Victoria, along with her mother Queen Silvia, were welcoming Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender to Sweden. The German couple were on a three-day visit to Stockholm, with a state banquet to welcome them at the Royal Palace in the capital.

The occasion marks the first state visit hosted by the Swedish royals since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The Swedish Royal Family wore their finest jewels which did not disappoint royal fans.

Crown Princess Victoria, who is heir to the throne, dazzled in a floor-length red dress, which she teamed with a red sash.

As it was a state occasion, she also donned one of her favourite tiaras, the Connaught Diamond Drop Tiara, which has been passed down the family via her great-grandmother, Princess Margaret.

The British granddaughter of Queen Victoria wed Sweden’s future monarch, King Gustaf VI Adolf, in 1905.

The tiara was a wedding gift from her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, who purchased it from E. Wolff and Co.

The piece is endlessly convertible, able to be worn as a tiara or in two different necklace settings.

After Margaret’s death, the tiara was inherited by her eldest son, Prince Gustaf Adolf.

DON’T MISS:

It became the favourite tiara of his wife, Princess Sibylla, and the family still sentimentally associates the tiara with Sibylla.

The tiara became so associated with her that it is sometimes simply called ‘Sibylla’s tiara.’ She regularly wore the Connaught tiara at events like the annual Nobel ceremony and the opening of the Riksdag, Sweden’s parliament.

Today, it remains in the Swedish royal jewellery collection and is often worn by Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Madeleine, and Princess Christina.

According to the Court Jeweller: “Delicate, antique, and sentimental: the diamond drop tiara of the Swedish Royal Family has to be one of the most lovely tiaras in a royal collection today.”

In 2015, Crown Princess Victoria also began wearing the tiara. She wore it in public for the first time at the wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia in June.

After pictures were released of Princess Victoria wearing the tiara on Thursday, royal fans were very impressed with the beautiful heirloom.

One royal fan wrote on Twitter: “Princess Victoria looks elegant in her glittering tiara!”

Meanwhile, on Thursday Victoria’s mother, Queen Silvia wore a long-sleeved emerald green dress, which she teamed with the Nine Prong Tiara.

Also known as Queen Sophie’s Diamond Tiara, it was first worn by Sophie herself in the 1800s, before being passed down through generations of Swedish royal women. It features more than 500 diamonds arranged in a sunburst formation.
