The change means drivers who passed their car test after January 1, 1997, will be able to tow a trailer up to 3,500kg when the law is changed. Previously, only those who passed their test before January 1, 1997, would be able to tow without a car and trailer test.

Another Twitter commenter responded to the DVSA tweet, saying: “Absolute shambles!
“Can’t extend theories for a couple of months due to impact on road safety but happy to abolish B+E tests…really?
“Who on earth makes these decisions?”
Many more were sympathetic to the towing training instructors who were one of the hardest hit by this move.
One trainer said: “I can’t start to calculate how many people have also just had their whole career wiped away in one email!”
Some, however, were delighted with the news, with social media users saying they would be looking into buying or upgrading their caravan.
One Facebook comment said: “With the amount of stay cations and people buying caravans/motorhomes I am not surprised this happened.
“Was a silly rule anyway.”
