Greg Swenson, the Chair of Republicans Overseas, insisted that US President Biden scored an own goal with his troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. Speaking to GB News’ Nigel Farage, Mr Swenson insisted that Biden had been advised against a complete pullout in time for the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Mr Swenson claimed President Biden was offered an alternative of keeping 3,500 troops or more in Afghanistan.
Mr Farage said: “20 years that we have put into this and the Taliban are back in charge.
“So not only are we back where we started, America is in worst state and is more divided now than it has ever been.
“It is, in that sense, quite a depressing anniversary.”
Mr Swenson replied: “It is too bad, the shame is it didn’t need to be this way.

“This was an own goal completely by President Biden.
“The withdrawal was a complete debacle and disaster and it didn’t have to be that way.
“We can have a different conversation whether we should have had a presence there in the long term but there is a bottom line.”
Mr Swenson then went on to discuss what other options President Biden had regarding Afghanistan.
Mr Swenson closed by attacking President Biden for failing to implement his message of unity.
He said: “Here is this President that came in arguing he wanted to bring unity back but all he has done is be completely divisive.
“It is really painful to see.”
