Kate Garraway confirms sequel to heartbreaking Derek documentary after NTA win

The Good Morning Britain presenter has confirmed she’s working on a sequel to Kate Garraway: Finding Derek. The documentary focussed on her husband Derek Draper’s battle with coronavirus and how she and her two children navigated life through this difficult time. Kate revealed the news following the programme’s win at the NTAs.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Kate said: “We are going to make another documentary — there are plans for more.

“Derek has a very short window of energy, but we are tying.

“He has been home for four months now and it was enough for him being home.

“Now we are really hoping we can have more and more people in to see him.”

After scooping the award, Kate added on Friday’s GMB: “It’s our wedding anniversary, Derek and I, today.

“I haven’t been able to see him yet. I’m going to go home and give him a massive hug.

“I’m going to give him this award and actually his present to me is the fact that he’s here and we’ve got a chance to celebrate in whatever way we can.”

On Thursday, Kate broke down in tears as she accepted the award for Best Authored Documentary.

“To all the Darceys and Billys and Dereks and Derek’s family, whatever you are going through, you are not forgotten,” she continued.

“We want the joy back, we want it to be over. But if you are still living with the scars, the fight goes on.”

Kate touched on her sadness at Derek not being able to accept the award himself.

“He should be here and he should have had the chance to tell his own story,” she said.

“Derek, you’re going to get the chance to tell your story please,” she noted. “The hope is real.”

In March 2020, former political advisor for the Labour party Derek was hospitalised with Covid.

He remained in hospital for over a year but has since returned home.

However, he is still recovering from health complications as a result of the virus.

The National Television Awards aired on ITV on Thursday at 7.30pm.
