'He definitely knows' Derek Draper 'so happy' with Kate Garraway's NTA win

On Friday’s Good Morning Britain, Kate Garraway and Martin Lewis were back to host the ITV programme as they discussed the latest news headlines. One of the main topics of conversation was about Kate’s victory at the NTAs on Thursday night, which saw the mum-of-two scooping an award for her documentary, Finding Derek. Kate managed to beat the likes of Roman Kemp and Katie Price, who were also up for the award.

During Friday’s GMB, Kate told her co-host about how she broke the news to Derek.

She went on to admit she phoned her daughter Darcy after her win, just so she could tell her husband the news.

“I didn’t go home last night. It is not as much of a scandal as it appears,” Kate joked.

“I’d booked a hotel room near to the ceremony as I knew I would be coming here today, and I knew I’d only get about an hour’s sleep.”

She said: “We’ve all been touched by the pandemic, whether it is livelihood, mental health, the other extraordinary documentaries have also been affected by the pandemic.”

“To all the Darceys and Billys and Dereks and Derek’s family, whatever you are going through, you are not forgotten,” she continued.

“We want the joy back. We want it to be over. But if you are still living with the scars, the fight goes on.”

Kate explained her sadness at Derek not being able to accept the award himself.

“Derek, you’re going to get the chance to tell your story please,” she concluded. “The hope is real.”

Fans were quick to send their messages of support and to congratulate Kate.

One simply penned: “Well done Kate. This says it all.”

Another wrote: “Many congratulations Kate for winning your award last night it was well deserved, I pray to god that Derek will make a full recovery stay strong sending lots of love Ken.”

A third added: “I was in absolute tears last night well deserved you are an inspiration..”
