Mike Parry in blistering rant at 'malicious' EU during heated Brexit clash with Owen Jones

Mike Parry has clashed furiously with Owen Jones over problems with the supply chain, hitting out at the European Union for its allegedly “malicious” behaviour towards Brexit Britain. Mr Parry claimed any delay to the supply chain was the result of the extra red tape the UK has been facing since departing the bloc. But his fellow Jeremy Vine panellist noted Britain chose to quit the bloc and agreed to the new terms of its relationship with Brussels by signing a new trade agreement in December 2020.

Discussing the recent shortage of HGV drivers the UK has been experiencing, as well as the delays to the supply chain, Mr Parry said: “The malice of the Europeans stuck in more and more red tape on getting goods across the channel to us into Northern Ireland.

“It’s malicious!

“The EU won’t get together and give us a decent trading deal.”

He continued: “They’re malicious because we’ve copped out on trading.

Now on the issue of lorry drivers to say it’s down to Brexit it is utter nonsense.

There is a worldwide crisis on lorry drivers that spreads through Europe into Asia and Southeast Asia.

He went on: “There simply aren’t enough lorry drivers around.

Now let me tell you this even before the pandemic, there were 60,000 vacancies for lorry drivers in this country, there’s now 100,000.

That’s because 70,000 people applied to take tests during the pandemic and only 25,000 were completed.”

But Mr Jones rejected Mr Parry’s argument, saying: “It sounds a bit like it’s always the same when someone quits a gym, and then goes, oh I no longer have the same benefits of being a gym member

“But the fact is we’ve left the EU, Brexit is gonna stay. Be proud of your victory because it ain’t going away

And part of that victory means that we don’t have the same rules that applied when we were members of the EU.

He continued: “So as a consequence, we don’t have the same benefits. That’s the deal.

That’s the deal that was signed off by Boris Johnson. We knew this would happen.

“And on the point about the labor shortages. Yeah, obviously it’s a fact that we did have lots of European migrant workers in this country, doing lots of these jobs, they’re not here anymore.

In a sense, I mean, I think that’s a shame in lots of ways, but we can partly solve it by increasing wages so more people from this country can do those jobs.”
