Joe Biden LIVE: President faces 'new crisis' as dozens of US students 'stranded' in Kabul

A political science professor has claimed the devastating situation in Afghanistan “may have no impact” on President Joe Biden’s election chances and legacy.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Mr Rom said: “In general, elections will be decided on the economy and the pandemic, and Afghanistan will seem like a long time ago and place far, far away, so it may have no impact on him.

“But Republicans will try to make the impact as large as possible.”

The claim comes after a withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan after 20 years in the region.

The withdrawal, characterised by chaos, paved the way for the Taliban to make a series of blistering successes, capturing 20 provincial cities in less than two weeks.

After the Taliban declared victory in Kabul, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the airport in a bid to flee the feared regime.

A number of people were crushed in a stampede and two people fell to their deaths from a US military aircraft as it took off.
